How to Evaluate Home Care Agencies for Quality and Reliability

Letting a caregiver into your parent's home takes a lot of trust. The right agency makes life easier for everyone. The wrong one adds stress, missed visits and worry. Here is how to tell the difference before you sign anything.

Start with the basics

• Licensing. Most states license home care or home health agencies. Check your state's health department website and confirm the license is active.
• Medicare certification. If you need skilled home health care paid by Medicare, the agency must be Medicare certified. You can look it up on Medicare's Care Compare site.
• Insurance and bonding. Ask for proof of liability insurance, workers' compensation and bonding.
• Employees, not contractors. Agencies that employ caregivers directly usually handle taxes, training and supervision. With a registry, you may become the employer.

Ask how they choose and train caregivers

Good agencies are proud of their hiring process and happy to explain it. Ask about background checks, driving records, reference checks, drug testing and the training caregivers get before they start and every year after. Make sure the match is right

• Is someone available nights and weekends?

Understand the costs

Ask for rates in writing, including weekend, holiday and overnight pricing, minimum hours per visit, and how you will be billed. Find out whether the agency accepts long term care insurance, VA benefits or Medicaid waivers, and whether they help with the paperwork.

Listen to other families

Read online reviews, but look for patterns more than any single review. Ask the agency for references from current clients. A few honest conversations will tell you more than any brochure.
